Voting ?

Posted by Paul on 28 Aug 2009, 08:21

I don´t know if anyone´s done this, but in the Painting comp there seems to be an average of 40+ votes and for the duels 22. Why?? there´s a lot more of us registered who could (theoretically at least) vote, and is it then always the same people who vote or....?

The main problem is that the only way to know that there's an ongoing duel is to enter the Duelling Field category and have a look there, something that no more than 25 people usually do. The polls for duels do not show in the Active Topics for long, and that's where most people look. Adam is aware of this, and he was thinking of editing periodically the duel topic to make it stay "up" for longer.

That would be good to keep the duels more obvious at least, but that there are over 200 members and only 20% (or less) vote at all, wether for Painting comp or the duels. Just odd I think.

Not all 200 members are active members. There's a group of about 50 active members.

Another thing would be to look at the number of times a poll is viewed and how many votes there are. There are a couple of problems with that though:
    1. You don't have to be a member to vote, so some views probably come from non-members.
    2. People will look at polls more than once (I know I do) to check on who's winning.

Just some random thoughts. I agree with Benno that there are probably a lot more lurkers than active members on this forum, and that that's why the number of votes is not as high as it could be.

With regards to the duels, is there a way to make them as visible as the painting competition? I don't know if this is something you want to do Benno, but I agree with Paul in that the duels get fewer votes because people forget to go look at them. Not sure what the solution to this is..... :?

@DBIO:
The painting competitions are not more or less visible than the duels.

I have been editing the duels (adding in a blank space and saving etc) every day or two to try and keep them orange boxed for everyone. Not sure if it works, but the latest has 25 votes so far and several hundred views, as you say this may be repeat views.

The painting competitions were always supposed to be "the main show" really so if there is a bias one was or another I'm glad it is to them. Hopefully the duels provide what they were designed for, a casual, fun format to challenge yourselves and each other and provide more great works for others to view.

Websites often work on a 10%-20% rule, 15-20% active, 15-20% of those are likely to votes/register for events/take part, etc etc. so to get 50 active members and then 20-30 votes from those means we are above average guys so don' worry too much! :-D

To be honest I haven' been voting on duels as I host them all, but I'll start if you like, adds one more to the count!

HI Adam,

Does editing a post move it up in the recent post lists?
One certain way of doing it is to add a new reply simply saying "BUMP" (Bring Up My Post).
I know some people don't like this on forums but for a duel or competition where only the moderators will be adding to them shouldn't be a problem.

Guys

Of course there is another option for promoting the competition polls and keeping them in the public eye.

Dare I say it  reinstate the website proper and have a permanent link on the homepage that takes members and visitors directly to the current polls.

There, I've gone and said it  I'm gonna be black banned for sure :nono:

I love you Benno really I do

Cheers

I think I've missed all the duels bar one, as I keep forgetting to look, and when I do there finished

Yeah, thats partly because they are a week duration, so they get a lot less general exposure that the full duration of the competitions various tiers.

We could up to it two weeks, or 10 days? I am afraid most people just won't bother anyway, either through inability to choose or apathy, but be assured that those of us who do love seeing all the new works, and draw a lot of inspiration from it!

All I meant was, that when you see so many have voted for one or the other,
eg; painting comp, 27 for pic A, it´s basically over cos for pic B to make a come back it´d need 28 votes and that´d mean 27 + 28 = 55, and as only 40-45 people vote.....? It would be possible if more "sleepers" woke up.
Didn´t Know that un-registered bods could vote...hmmmm...I´ll have to tell my mates that... ;-) ;-) :-) :joker: )

Not true indeed Paul. You surtenly have to be member to vote. The only thing that is true, is that there are a lot of views of not members. And the only thing they see is how many votes that been given.

PS: you can try this, by not logging in.

Paul let's launch something in the Single figure topic, where it all started. I make a post over there.
