If you are in Gelderland this weekend and go to see the battle at Groenlo, have a beer! I wish I could be there to enjoy it with you, but because of my back I decided to give it a miss this year.

If you have never been to see this, it is something to see. Apart from the reenactors, that even as I am writing, are making their way across Europe from all over, with their horses and cannons, armour and costumes. There is a lot more, the people in Groenlo put so much effort into this - not only are there siege works and sap trenches, but the town is decorated to get the feel of the 1625 town. Many non reenactors will be in costume and there will be musicians and vendors walking about the various camps scattered about the old town.

I wish I could be part of it this year, but it is what it is and I will be drinking Grolsch beer out of solidarity.

Go to youtube and search for Slag om Grolle, and you'll see what I mean.

For those that didn't manage to get there - this is nearly as good. High quality video of the whole of Sunday's fight.

If anyone is wondering about the zig-zag trenches. These are sap trenches that work their way towards the opponent with the earth piled on the side from which the gun-fire will come, having gotten so far they then turn and go back in the other direction. In the film "The Last of the Mohicans with Daniel Day Lewis, you can see them making these, and the soldiers at the end closest to the enemy are shielded by a 'sap-roller' a large basket shaped affair that they push in front of themselves as they did.

A memory on my Facebook reminded me that the word zigzagloopgraven is apparently used to describe those sap trenches. I'm guessing that it is a modern word, but I would love to be wrong about that.
