Well, the Mounted Amazons arrived this morning, curtesy of Hannant's!
They really are nice moldings. Loads of details - interesting weapons, braided hair, skimpy armour and bare bums. The animals are top class models too - the Therapod dinosaur is chunky old beast that I certainly wouldn't like to meet in a dark alley. All of the animals are on a heroic scale - but they're nice models. There is some flash on the unicorn's legs and a tiny bit on the stag, but otherwise these are excellents models.
The standing, pointing amazon - who I feel is based on Red Sonya from the film is a bit skinny, (but then again Birgitte Nilsson was a skinny thing. There is flash on the human figures but without getting the craft knife out and trying clean the figures, it doesn't look like it will cause too many problems.
The three shields are nicely bare of any designs, which I prefer because it opens up the possibility for painting.
As I look at the weapons I am more and more convinced that the designer is a Skyrim - Elder Scrolls fan, like me. Two of the ladies have double handed axes, four have swords, one a spear and two have bows. One of the archers has the wind catching the big hood of her cloak and blowing it away from her face.
My favourite pose is the girl with two swords, arms akimbo, about to scythe her way through the enemies ranked up in front of her, drive them before her and listen to the lamentation of their menfolk, etc etc. (I'm going to have to find a good mount for that - one that complements her pose and just makes it even more powerful).
I haven't compared them to the 'ancient' amazons, yet, and I will post some pictures later, but I really like these.
My interest in fantasy has undergone a resurgence recently, and this useful set and these figures have arrived at just the right time.
