fresh new moulds ? So it's not the old Atlantic ones ? How could they make new moulds ? Or are re-sculpting of the old figs ? Or did they use the plastic figs as masters for new moulds ? I am curious ...

That shows your age.
"fascist" -"that's right"
(The Young Ones - Brit sitcom of the 1980s for those not in the know
Must have one of those figures now to go with Viv's Anglia

I have to ask the manufacturer: I guess they've been resculpted, but exactly identical to the original.

As a collector I would purchase (the original) figures for collecting reasons.

As a figure painter and diorama builder I would leave my fingers off this crap. It is also a very political set with all these "hailing" fascist figs. Not my taste.

As a collector, I already own that box, perfect on sprue, so I will buy this set just to have them painted (I would never paint the originals).
They don't look very political. They look more like Monty Python or Mel Brooks characters.

Surely Atlantic did something really risky back then (Italy in the 70s), when it was still possible to be killed if simply suspected to have some sympathy for fascism. Luckily we children ignored it, but we could have been assaulted in the streets only if we were going back home from the toy shop with a box of Atlantic Mussolini in our hand. However, I am sure they did not mean any political involvement in production of 1/72 figs: Lenin & Stalin and Mao counterweighted Hitler and Mussolini in their "Great Revolutions" serie.
Atlantic was always uncertain if producing toys or modelling pieces. From what I can remember, their idea was to induce children to study history by playing with toy soldiers, hence some creations with a strong historic value (old civilizations, great revolutions). However, since children wanted to play war with their soldiers, they wanted shooting figures, that is why the Mussolini and Hitler sets did not sell much: I can remember that, whenever I could find 100 lire and headed to the general store to buy an Atlantic box, I could always find loads of Hitler, Mussolini and Carabinieri band that nobody wanted. Hironically, the first two are now the rarest and most sought after sets

This set isn't one I'd value but only because of the cartoon-y sculpts.

If manufacturers stopped making the 'Bad Guys', there would go a lot of sets.

No more Romans, for instance

They look quite funny, yes. But that was the sculptor´s fault, I am sure it wasn´t the intention of the producer to get some caricatures with this set.

There are pictures of the new edition of these figs at the Waterloo 1815 website. Not the best of photos, but to me it looks lite these new versions have better proportions than the old Atlantic. I wish they will release new versions of all the old Atlantic politically incorrect series with Hitler, Stalin, Mao...

Pictures of this set and other news are up on PSR: http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/review.aspx?id=2288

Have to say, I'm very disappointed that the set retains their old Atlantic size of 21 mm. They won't match Waterloo 1815:s other italian sets. Perhaps they match Airfix' old Italian infantry in size though.
